There are fine restaurants that offer delicacies and superior service that might warrant higher price tags. Then there are restaurants that profess to be fine dining establishments, but in fact pale in comparison to your local Texas Roadhouse or Outback Steakhouse.
Chicago Prime Steakhouse in Schaumburg, IL definitely puts on the pretense of being an upscale eatery. Their prices certainly reflect a high opinion of themselves. But paying those prices would be a sad mistake and a total waste of money.
BAD FOOD, BAD SERVICE
Both the food and the service at Chicago Prime Steakhouse are disappointing, to say the least. A less politically correct description would be that the food is just not very good. It’s edible, but that’s the nicest thing that can be said.
As club regulars were fawned over and given preferential seating, we were seated in the main dining room. The table was neither great nor bad.
That’s as close to a compliment as Chicago Prime Steakhouse will get.
We ordered the Prime Rib and the Beef Wellington and were not impressed with either.
The prime rib was ordered rare and served verging on well done. It was dry and relatively bland and flavorless except for a hard outer crust. The outer crust was flavorful, but not in a good way. The joy of biting into succulent inviting meat never happened. Eating each bite was almost laborious. Honestly, I’ve gotten better at a truck stop.
SOGGY AND OVERDONE
Beef Wellington is a hard dish to make at home, thus why we enjoy ordering it at restaurants. Why order something you can have at home when you have the chance to enjoy something outside your normal cooking skills?
The key to a good Beef Wellington is that the meat inside be tender and rare, and the outer pastry crust should be fluffy but firm. What was served to our table was a well done piece of meat in a soggy excuse for a pastry. It wasn’t just bad, it was disgusting. A microwave Hot Pocket has a better flavor and consistency than the Beef Wellington at Chicago Prime Steakhouse.
Not only was the food an utter disappointment, the service at Chicago Prime Steakhouse was horrible. Our drink glasses went unfilled most of the evening. For the prices Chicago Price Steakhouse charges, service should be impeccable. Instead, we found ourselves trying to flag down our server to no avail. Nor did any of the other service people working attempt to help.
The final insult of the evening came when we prepared to leave. Suddenly our server who had been neglecting us all night was on hand to demand to see our bill to make sure we had paid. She did not even offer an apology when she reviewed our receipt and saw it had been paid.
Every interaction leaves us with a story. We went into our Chicago Prime Steakhouse meal with an open mind and reasonable expectations. We walked away offended by inferior service and food any decent establishment would be ashamed to serve.
It is highly recommended that you avoid Chicago Prime Steakhouse. The food is awful. The service is awful. It is just an awful restaurant. You’d be happier going to McDonald’s.
