Joe Biden: What it Takes to be President

Today, President Joe Biden visited the local community college in my area: McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Illinois. It was heartwarming to see the massive turnout of supporters for President Biden. It was worth the inconvenience of the roadblocks necessary for his safe travel.

When the hopefuls declared their candidacy for the 2020 democratic presidential nomination, I was largely in favor of Senator Bernie Sanders because I believe in the pillars of his platform such as Medicare for All, free higher education, federally legalizing marijuana, raising the minimum wage, and expecting the wealthy and corporations to pay their fair share of taxes.

I wasn’t opposed to Joe Biden as a candidate, I just favored another person in the race. Once Biden became the official 2020 democratic presidential candidate, of course I swung my full support behind him.

For me it wasn’t so much that I was supporting Joe Biden, but more so that I was taking a stand that anything would be better than the racist, sexist, criminal, traitor the republicans had to offer. We saw what four years of the Russian asset Donald Trump had done to our once great nation. It was vital that Trump not be allowed to steal another four years.

But you know what? Joe Biden grew on me. The more I listened to him speak, the more I appreciated his character. He is proving to be a truly great president, following in the footsteps of my favorite president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Like FDR did to rebound the U.S. from the Great Depression, Biden has invested in the American people.

One thing that stands out about President Biden is that he sees the world as bigger than himself. For instance, although he is Catholic, President Biden is Pro Choice. He realizes it is not his choice to make. If he were a pregnant woman, he would not consider having an abortion. However, he is not a pregnant woman and never will be. His religion should not dictate what other people do with their own bodies.

That’s one example of how President Biden embraces the fact that he is every American’s leader. He is open to other views and changing his position to support what is best for all citizens.

President Biden has supported the filibuster in past, but I think he is smart enough to see that he might have to rethink that position. A minority party should not have the ability to stop progress on issues that an overwhelming majority of voters support.

Similarly, President Biden has so far been against legalizing marijuana. However, I think he will be open to the good that will come out of legalizing it. The taxes the government would collect could be used to pay down the massive debt that the Trump presidency left us with.

Under Ronald Reagan we went from being the number one creditor nation to the number one debtor nation. President Bill Clinton paid off the debt. President George W. Bush made us the number one debtor nation again. President Barack Obama cut that debt in half. Business failure Donald Trump added over 36% to the national debt in just four years – leaving President Biden to clean up his $27 trillion mistakes.

Obviously, I was not the only person who wanted Trump out of the White House. People across the country waited hours in line to cast their vote because they knew we had to elect a competent president, not a Russian plant. As a result, Joe Biden won the election by over 7 million votes. And our country has been in turn around ever since Biden took the oath of office. We will return to glory.

I was filled with pride as I drove by McHenry County College today, knowing that a truly great president was there connecting with my friends and neighbors. But there was also a moment of sadness as I noticed a few trucks with Trump 2020 flags hanging off the back  – an indicator that you can find stupid people anywhere. Often times you don’t have to look to hard. In this case, they were considerate enough to have signs identifying themselves.

Trump lost the election. It wasn’t close. He tried a violent insurrection, but it didn’t change the fact that he lost the election. He is a loser. He is not going to be “reinstated” as President of the United States on August 13, 2021 just because the My Pillow guy says so.

Those of us operating in the real world are going to concentrate on rebuilding our once great nation under the leadership of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. We’re focused on the road in front of us. If your flag says 2020, you’re living in the past.

I am proud to call Joe Biden President. He is a true democratic leader with a vision to get America back on course. He has the potential to be one of our greatest presidents. Much will depend on what does going forward. Will he move to abolish the filibuster? Will he federally legalize marijuana? Will he ensure the wealthy and corporations by their fair share of taxes?  Will he expand the Supreme Court?

These are just some of the decisions that President Biden will have to navigate over the next few years. I’m glad he’s in office. He seems to be the right man for the job.

Thank you, Mr. President for coming to visit the McHenry County community. You make me proud to be an American.

Peace. Love. Trust.
