The Republican Party Has Passed the Point of No Return

It is astonishing the depths that Republicans in Congress are going to in order to deflect the reality that on January 6, 2021, Donald Trump incited an insurrection.

At the urging of Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani, a violent mob of Trump followers descended on the Capitol. They attacked the barricade, leading to injuries or death to 140 police officers.

The Trump army broke windows and doors in order to illegally enter the Capitol on a mission to stop the certification of ballots confirming Joe Biden had been lawfully elected President of the United States in a free and fair election. The mob stalked the halls of the Capitol on a mission to kill Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Mike Pence.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of officers like Eugene Goodman, the domestic terrorists weren’t able to find and inflict harm to members of Congress. But, they didn’t leave quietly. They vandalized the offices of members of Congress, smeared feces on the walls, and tortured members of the police with stun guns, pepper spray, and metal pipes.

Through it all, Trump watched with glee as the attempted coup unfolded on live TV – refusing to call off the mob for hours. At one point House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called Trump directly, scared for his life. He begged Trump to send in more troops or call off his followers. Famously, Trump replied “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”

When Trump finally did take action, he issued a taped statement praising the mob, telling them that they were “special.” Then he took it one step further, telling them that he loved them.

It’s hard to deny the facts of the events. They played out on live television. We saw in real time the violence and hatred of the seething mob of Trump-backing terrorists. But deny the facts is exactly what Republicans are trying to do.

They continue to perpetuate the Big Lie that Trump didn’t the lose the 2020 Presidential election by over 7 million votes. Every far-right wing conspiracy theory that Trump, MyPillow Guy Mike Lindell, and QAnon have perpetuated has been debunked.

  • Dominion voting machines were not programmed to switch votes from Trump to Biden.
  • Sharpie markers did not bleed through to erase Trump votes.
  • There was no evidence of any fraud with mail-in voting.
  • Nobody found suitcases of uncounted ballots.
  • Poll watchers were not barred from observing.
  • There were not thousands of votes from dead people.

Perhaps the most damning of the evidence against Trump conspiracy theorists is the statement released by Trump’s handpicked Attorney General Bill Barr that there was absolutely no evidence of any widespread voter fraud that could have impacted the election in any way.

Now comes news of a far-fetched conspiracy theory that Trump insisted the Justice Department pursue to try to change the outcome of the 2020 election. He claimed that people affiliated with the Italian defense firm Leonardo used satellites to change votes from Trump to Biden. Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue called the Trump theory “pure insanity.”

Insane is exactly what Trump is. He is a narcissistic sociopath with no regard for anyone or anything but himself. He thinks if he says something, that makes it true.

Republicans in the House and in the Senate have thrown logic and reason out the window. They are sticking to their story that the 2020 election was somehow “stolen”, despite not a single piece of evidence to support this claim. In addition, they are now trying to change the story of what transpired on January 6.

Trump himself called the insurrection a love fest with his minions hugging and kissing the police. This is in direct contrast to what everyone saw play out on television.

Representative Andrew Clyde of Georgia says the people who breached the Capitol behaved like tourists. Clyde hasn’t been able to explain away the photos of him stacking furniture to barricade the door from the violent mob as he feared for his life.

Officer Michael Fanone was assigned to the Capitol on the day of the insurrection. “I experienced the most brutal, savage, hand-to-hand combat of my entire life. Let alone my policing career, which spans almost two decades,” he said of the day’s events. These actions are hardly those of a tourist.

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson concedes that there was an attack on the Capitol, but it was ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter people dressed up to look like Trump supporters. Johnson has yet to offer a plausible theory as to why BLM supporters would want to stop the certification of Biden as President. Johnson also fails to offer any evidence that ANTIFA is an actual organization and not just a blanket term for people against fascism. Of course, Ron Johnson is a complete idiot.

When Republicans in the Senate refused to move forward a bipartisan investigation into the insurrection, it was a slap in the face to the 140 police officers who were injured or killed on January 6.

There will be an investigation in the House of Representatives. Republicans will argue as to its validity, but it was their choice to try to be a part of a coverup instead of doing the civic duty they were elected for.

Refusing to convict Trump for inciting an insurrection will be regarded as the point of no return for the Republican Party. They had clear and irrefutable evidence, and they let him walk.

Now they are trying to rewrite history.

Shame on them.

Shame on Senators like Ron Johnson.

Shame on Representatives like Kevin McCarthy and Andrew Clyde.

Shame on all the Republicans in Congress who are choosing party over country.

That, in my eyes, is treason.

New evidence comes out every day as to the depths of Trump’s corruption. The latest is that he weaponized the DOJ to spy on Democratic members of Congress and members of the press.

In New York, investigations into possible financial crimes by Trump and the Trump Organization seem to be moving forward at full speed. The Manhattan District Attorney has convened a grand jury to determine if they will indict Trump.

But no matter how much dirt comes out on Trump, the Republican party is tied to him. They made that choice when the Republicans in Senate refused to convict Trump for inciting the insurrection. That was the point of no return. Now no matter how looney his claims are, they have to back him.

I will shed a tear for the GOP of by gone eras each time the current members of congress lie for their Führer. They are going down a dangerous path. Our democracy hangs in the balance.

I expect that we haven’t seen the last evidence of Trump’s corruption. Nor is it likely that we have we seen the last lies from the GOP to justify his crimes.

During his time in office Trump told over 30,000 lies, as tabulated by the Washington Post Fact Checker. That is the horse the Republicans have tied their future to.

In the 2020 elections over 81 million voters cast their ballots against Republican candidate Donald Trump. We need to surpass that turnout in 2022, voting in Democratic candidates to the House and Senate who are focused on the betterment of our country and not just perpetuating the lies of a delusional old fool.

Peace. Love. Trust.
