The embrace of Donald Trump’s Big Lie that he didn’t lose the 2020 election by members of the Republican Party is causing a huge divide in the party.
Right now, Republicans like Sen. Ron Johnson and Rep. Matt Gaetz are trying to whitewash Trump’s January 6, 2021 attempted coup. They are lining up behind him as he points the way for a Republican party with no ethics, driven entirely by greed. It is a party that shuns the truth and seems to even enjoy lying to its constituents.
The Party of Trump is racist, sexist, elitist, homophobic and lawlessly corrupt. It is the party of conspiracy theories. It is the party of QAnon. It is the party of The Big Lie.
But there are traditional Republicans in office that refuse to bow down to the lies of the twice-impeached Trump.
“I will not sit back and watch in silence, while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law, and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy,” stated Rep. Liz Cheney prior to being stripped of her rank as GOP Conference Chair for refusing to pretend Trump didn’t attempt to overthrow the government.
There is a clear divide within the Republican leadership. You have the those who have made the choice to align themselves with the lies of a conman. On the other hand, you have those that refuse to ignore the fact that Trump incited a violent incursion on the Capitol and on our government to try to change the results of a lawful election. It was the move of a fascist trying to secure supreme leader status.
“The election is over,” notes Cheney, referring to President Joe Biden’s overwhelming defeat of Trump. “That is the rule of law. That is our constitutional process. Those who refuse to accept the rulings of our courts are at war with the Constitution.”
A war with the Constitution is exactly what Trump Republicans are embarking on. Based on his actions, Donald Trump should be in prison for treason. Instead, you have names like Sen. Josh Hawley and Sen. Lindsey Graham pledging their support to his Big Lie and publicly vilifying any traditional Republican who doesn’t parrot the same falsehoods.
As a result of this chasm between traditional Republicans and Trump Republicans, a healthy number of Republican leaders with traditional Republicans values are considering leaving the GOP and forming a new party.
Trump couldn’t win in 2020 with the backing of a full contingent of the GOP. How do Trump Republicans think they’re going to win in 2024 without the votes of traditional Republicans?
Trump likes to say that he has the backing of the majority of Americans. While Trump supporters may be the loudest and most ill-mannered backers of a political candidate ever, they are in actuality a minority. A vocal minority, but a minority all the same.
Trump never had an approval rating of even 50%. Not one day of his presidency did even half of Americans feel he was doing an acceptable job.
Joe Biden has a 62% approval rating. Why? Because instead of sitting around and watching TV and tweeting, he’s running the country and pushing forward an agenda that the majority of Americans want.
The National Republican Congressional Committee was discovered to be hiding how badly Trump is currently polling in its core battleground districts. Only 41% still favor Trump. In fact, President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, and the $2.3 trillion American Jobs Plan are all more popular than Trump with voters in those districts.
Trump has the votes of the white supremacists. The question is, if respected Republicans like Sen. Mitt Romney, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, and Rep. Cheney offer a conservative party alternative to Trump, would lifelong Republicans who don’t share those racist beliefs follow? Indications are they will.
So, why are people like Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Ted Cruz still backing a losing horse? Trump is a cult leader. His followers believe his lies. So, when he tells them he’s the most popular person in the universe, they believe him.
The 2020 election had the most diverse voting profile in history. Latinos, Asians, Blacks, and Pacific Islanders all showed a decisive increase in voter turnout.
I think history will look back on this period of time as a crossroads. People turned out in record number to vote Trump out of office. We don’t want Trump to run in 2024. We want him in jail for treason, tax evasion, rape, libel, and whatever other crimes he’s committed.
Remember, in 1923 Adolf Hitler attempted an insurrection and failed. Only a few years later, and he was ruler of Germany with eyes set on taking over the world.
Trump attempted an insurrection and failed. We can’t forget that. We can’t let Trump Republicans whitewash it. We cannot let Trump Republicans rewrite history. We must stand behind the brave traditional Republicans like Cheney who are willing to stand up for the truth.
Peace. Love. Trust.
