Despite his temper tantrums claiming otherwise, Donald Trump lost the 2020 Presidential Election by over 7 million votes. The election results have been tabulated, checked, and rechecked.
The fact is that Trump has a certain vocal base that like to fly flags with his name on them and prance around in camo gear sporting automatic weapons protesting being required to wear a mask during a pandemic. And while this “base” rejoice in announcing their allegiance to their Führer at the top of their lungs to anyone in ear shot, being the loudest one in the room doesn’t mean everyone else in the room believes the same things you do.
The majority of Americans despise Trump as a conman who has used the power of the office he swore to uphold to line his own pockets. He has openly attacked racial equality, even going so far as to endorse white supremacists. And, he is not quiet about his racism. Nor is he quiet about his lowly view of women.
He is a brute, a bully, and a business failure who has lost over a billion dollars and is currently in debt at least $1 billion now according to Forbes. He calls our military “losers” and “suckers” while colluding with Russia to subvert our election process. He sexually assaults women and openly brags about it, then brushes it off as “locker room talk.” He ignored scientific experts and is directly responsible for the needless deaths of over 330,000 people due to downplaying a pandemic that could have been controlled or avoided. At the end of the day Donald Trump does not possess a single good quality.
Ever the grifter, Trump now solicits donations for his legal fund to challenge the election results. What the poor souls who fall for his latest scam don’t realize is that most of that money goes directly into his pockets. Of the over $207 million Trump has raised with his crusade to overturn the election, only $14 million has gone to legal costs or recount costs.
Fundraising appeals put out by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee refer to an “election defense fund,” but the in the fine print it explains that 75% of each donation goes to another political action committee Trump created on Nov. 9 for his post-White House aspirations.
The Trump ship is going down. Only his simple-minded base believe his conspiracy theories. Of course, there are Republicans in Congress who are willing to side with Trump on his attack on democracy – trying to overturn the election. But they know they are grasping at straws. The election is done. Joe Biden won – by a landslide.
Now the question is, who is going down with the ship?
Bill Barr has proven himself to be the most corrupt Attorney General in the history of the United States of America. He covered up Trump’s collusion with Russia. He tear gassed peaceful protesters for Trump to have a photo op in front of a church he’d never been to. He tried to argue that government should pay for Trump’s defense against allegations of sexual assault committed before he took office. He is a shining example of a Gold Level member of the Cult of Trump. Yet even he issued a statement saying U.S. Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election. Then he resigned, leaving the sinking ship.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has also been a huge Trump ally, covering up his crimes and enabling his fantasies of a dictatorship. Yet even McConnell is leaving the boat before it goes down.
“Our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect,” the Kentucky Republican said in mid-December. “The Electoral College has spoken. So today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”
Other prominent Republicans have also looked to exit the Trump fiasco.
“At some point you have to face the music,” said Senate Majority Whip John Thune of South Dakota. “It’s time for everybody to move on.”
So who is going down with the ship?
One of Trump’s favorite lapdogs Senator Lindsey Graham still believes there is a “very narrow path” for Trump to overturn the election. Perhaps he’s staying on board while gunning for a pardon for his attempts to interfere in Georgia’s state election.
That may be all that’s left now for Trump supporters in Congress – continue to pledge allegiance to a failed dictator in hopes of a last-minute pardon for their complicity. But the ones with a modicum of intelligence are recognizing Biden as the president-elect.
Yes, Trump has changed politics. Unfortunately, it is change for the worst.
But we have a new administration coming into power in January. And, when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris take office, we will be able to let the healing begin as we come together to rebuild the great nation Trump has tried to decimate.
Peace. Love. Trust.
