I love B-movies: movies with a predictable plot, usually starring former TV heartthrobs who have fallen out of the public eye.
Boone: The Bounty Hunter doesn’t have a recognizable star, but it has a delicious formula script and cameos by several colorful has-beens.
John Hennigan stars as Boone. As the title so aptly suggests, Boone is a bounty hunter modeled after the reality series Dog the Bounty Hunter with a not so subtle dose of 1990’s guilty pleasure crime drama Renegade starring Lorenzo Lamas.
Boone’s reality series in which he tracks down celebrities who have committed minor legal infractions, is fading in the ratings. The network is threatening to pull the plug on the dying series, so Boone concocts a plan to take down a high profile alleged drug peddler who has fled bail to Mexico after accidentally killing his girlfriend of the moment with a lethal drug over dose.
Delightfully, the young criminal is played by none other than Jonathan Lipnicki, who you may remember as the cute-as-can-be child of Renee Zellweger in the Tom Cruise movie Jerry Maguire.
Of course, the apprehension plan goes awry as Boone faces the wrath of Lipnicki’s drug kingpin father, who not only has Boone and his team in his crosshairs, but also holds captive an entire Mexican village, forcing them to manufacture his drugs for export to the U.S.
Eventually realizing he can’t take on the drug lord and his minions on his own, Boone comes to appreciate the value of his team and unites the locals to take back their town.
While Henngan may not be an action star yet, he has all the makings: handsome, muscular, adept at his own acrobatic stunts, and not too bad of an actor. He makes an enjoyable leading man providing equal parts action, drama, and comedy.
Boone: The Bounty Hunter is not going to win any awards, but it is a fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Add to that many cameos by once-were actors including Kevin Sorbo, Rampage Jackson, Corbin Bernsen, Tiny Lister, even Renegade himself – Lorenzo Lamas.
If you enjoy B-movies, this is one worth watching. I found it to be an enjoyable cheese-fest.
Peace. Love. Trust.
